Being a good leader is dependent on not just charisma but also having good leadership skills. Your charisma would burst forth and show only for a while but in the long term, your lack of good leadership skills would eventually reveal you as a “fraud”. If you are to be put in a place of leadership, there are certain skillsets that must have been built overtime. Though, some people have the natural aura of a leader and are natural born leaders, anyone can be a leader if they develop the skills necessary.

In any sphere of life you find yourself in, it is important that you are known to have leadership skills because no person or organization would promote someone who hasn’t shown leadership skills to a high position. Here, we discuss things you can do to help develop good leadership skills or to further hone the skills you already have.

  • Learn to follow. It is a widely acclaimed and general saying that good followers tend to become the best leaders. The best way to learn the rudiments of being a good team lead is to watch closely what people who are senior to you do and the best way to learn from your leader is to be a good follower. It is only natural that a good leader spots a good follower who is ready to learn and puts them under his wing.
  • Be disciplined. To be a good leader, discipline is required. Whatever you do, always remember that people are watching, whether the people on your team or the higher-ups. Always show discipline in your work. Meet deadlines as and when due. Have good time management and be punctual. Have good habits and manner of speech too. Remember that discipline is not something you get in one day but it is developed over time as a result of habits you have grown over time.
  • Show responsibility. One of the traits that distinguishes leaders is how responsible they are. Take on more projects, but not too much that you cannot handle them. To be a good team lead, you cannot be okay with doing little or the barest minimum. Constantly step out of your comfort zone and learn.
  • Have a mentor. Having a mentor keeps you in check and accountable and provides you with guidance and advice when you need it. When choosing a mentor, you should be intentional about choosing someone who is an experienced and respected leader. Make sure you’re choosing someone with goals that align with yours. Your mentor could be anyone. Just ensure it is someone you respect and can learn from.

Having due respect for people around you is also another good characteristic of being a good leader. Respect people’s thoughts, opinions and ideas. Regardless of if it’s a superior person or a subordinate, respect them and remember that you’re being watched by people. Respect is earned too, if you’re known to be that nagging leader who shuts people down, you might be feared but not respected and it’ll definitely hinder your rapport with your team. Be a good team lead, have good communication, interpersonal and management skills.
